Dr. Tina S. Alster

Dr. Tina S. Alster is the founding director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery and is a clinical professor at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Alster received her B.S. and M.D. degrees from Duke University where she was graduated magna cum laude and elected to Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She was one of ten students selected by her university for inclusion in Who's Who in American College and Universities. She interned at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania followed by completion of a dermatology residency at Yale University and a specialized 1-year laser surgery fellowship in Boston. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Alster has organized and lectured at numerous laser surgery courses and medical meetings worldwide.
Her research with lasers has focused primarily on the treatment of birthmarks, scars, and photodamaged skin about which she has conducted many of the earliest clinical and histologic studies. Dr. Alster has published widely in peer-reviewed medical journals, authoring over 300 manuscripts and eight textbooks on the subject of dermatologic laser surgery, including Cosmetic Laser Surgery and Manual of Cutaneous Laser Techniques.
Dr. Alster is actively involved in several medical societies and has served on the board of directors for the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the Women’s Dermatologic Society. She was the recipient of the 2001 ASLMS Leon Goldman Award, the 2006 ASDS Public Service Award and the 2009 WDS Mentor of the Year Award.
She maintains leadership and board positions in numerous other professional organizations, including the Dermatology Foundation and Duke University where she established a scholarship endowment for women wishing to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Alster serves as the consulting dermatologist to Lancôme, assisting with new product development and industry direction. She has received many honors, including listings in America’s Best Doctors, Town & Country’s Best Cosmetic Surgeons, America’s Elite 1000, Allure’s Influencer of the Year, and Washingtonian’s Best Doctors and has been featured on Oprah, The Today Show, CNN, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, 20/20, and The Discovery Channel.
