Acne
Acne affects nearly 80% of the population in some form and is the most commonly diagnosed skin disorder in the U.S. Acne is an inflammatory skin condition affecting the sebaceous follicles (or pores) that contain oil-producing sebaceous glands. Acne is most common on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and upper back where there is a high concentration of sebaceous follicles. While there have been many myths as to the cause of acne (including poor hygiene and diet), heredity and hormones play large roles in its development since they directly affect sebaceous glands.
Blackheads and whiteheads: Blackheads and whiteheads are open and closed comedones, respectively, and they develop as the follicles become clogged and inflamed.
Pimples: Pimples form when trapped oil and additional debris in the follicle are attacked by bacteria. This causes what is, in effect, a small infection.
Cysts: Eventually the blocked follicle bursts from built-up pressure, spilling its contents into surrounding tissue and spreading the infectious material deep into the dermis. The result is an inflamed pustule or cyst that acts to destroy a portion of the dermis and its network of collagen fibers. Cysts can be painful and lead to scars.
Possible Treatments
1
5FU/Kenalog Injections
5FU and Kenalog are injectable treatments that may be used separately or in combination, depending on the treatment objective. 5FU/Kenalog mixtures improve the appearance of raised keloid scars when injected directly into the scar. Kenalog eliminates pimples or reduces the appearance of raised bumps from silicone injections when injected alone directly into the pimple or silicone.
